Thursday, August 12, 2010 REGAN LAKE & CANYON ROAD RESERVOIR

Yesterday, we had lunch in town at the old Firehouse.  Up until recently, they still had the pole the firemen used to slide down from the loft above.  Also did some looking in the shops.  Early in the evening, we went to the cemetery and higher roads looking for critters.  Never saw anything.

This morning we headed out for Regan Lake.  Almost didn't let Charles & Jane go -- they are grounded for staying out past curfew last night -- partying with the locals at Tommy-Knockers!

Most of the trails are 15-20 miles out of town.  When we finally got to today's trail to the lake, it was less than five miles long, but took over an hour to travel.  The trail went thru both meadows & forests.  Parts of it were like a roller coaster; up an down; up and down; bumpy in spots.

The lake is 91.5 acres and the water was crystal clear.
Here come Jane & Charles along the shoreline.
The end of the road:

It started raining, lightening, thunder when we arrived
You see stranded hikers taking refuge in cabins in moveis --
This is a state Division of Wildlife cabin open to public use.
It is pretty primitive, but I guess if you "needed" it, it would be a God-send.
Even stocked with canned goods, coffee, paper towels, etc.
The "kitchen"
Bunks in the bedroom.  Yucky!
And a crescent-moon potty

Sitting in the Jeeps, having lunch & watching it rain!

Some kind of pink bloom on the water:

Didn't stop raining, so we headed out before it got too muddy.
Saw this timid deer:

. . . and comes up with food to put in baby's beak.
Babies had the brightest, fuzzy orange heads.
We have found a little cafe that makes the BEST goodies from scratch.  They only bake enough goods to sell in one day; usually sold out shortly after noon.  They are only open nights on Thursdays, and that is "Pizza Night."  We had to make a reservation to reserve our "dough" so we could have pizzas.  They were very good.  They will be closed tomorrow.  That means no cinnamon twists for breakfast!

After pizza, we took a ride out of town thru the cemetery where elk are alleged to hang out, but once again, they knew we were coming and elected to go someplace else.
