Tuesday, June 29, 2010 KENDALL MTN

We had a late start this morning, so we had lunch in town and then headed up Kendall Mountain.  Kendall is the mountain that our RVs face.  So, it's a quick access.  The trail starts off with lots of pine trees.  Once above the timberline, it has a rugged, rocky look.  We had tried this trail several weeks ago and were blocked by a snowdrift.  We made it almost all the way to the top today.  We did manage to get to almost 13,000 feet before being blocked by the snow.

Stage coach rides thru town:
The train comes from Durango several times a day and dumps out the tourists.  They are like a bunch of bees flitting around, desperate to find a place to spend their money. The shopkeepers love them -- We try to get to the restaurant before the "train people" arrive!

Starting up Kendall
A rare find -- a red Columbine.
We see lots of lavender and white ones, but this is the first year we have found red ones in the wild.  Columbines are Colorado's state flower.

Just a couple more switchbacks to go

You can see the snowdrift ahead, so we stopped at a spot that had "turn-around" room.

You never know where a little purple flower may pop up!
That little dot at the beginning of the ledge road is Charles & Jane.

This marmot is "King of the Flowers"

Kathy & Jane looking for that perfect picture.
See the mountain tops across the way under the Jeeps

More flowers growing out of the rocks
A baby marmot
Marmot "wearing" a rock around it's neck.
Charles walking from where we parked to the snowdrift.
He said the drift was about waist-deep.
Marmots popping out everywhere.
Another baby

A detour to one of our favorite rock hunting mines.
Charles, Jane & Jim checking them out.
The grandkids would go crazy here trying to figure out which rocks to take.
It's easy to understand how the miners got "gold fever."  Lots of sparkles aka "Fools' Gold"
The mining opening

A rock, just waiting to fall

Doesn't look too bad?
But this is how narrow the road was
Color when you  least expect it
Headed back down
